When asked who their favorite football or baseball team is, many women cringe and state their dislike for such activities. They’d much rather talk about the newest additions to their shoe collection or the latest makeup tips. I, on the other hand, would gladly pull out my collection of baseball trading cards or my favorite Eagles football jersey. It’s often seen as a taboo for women to enjoy sports as much as, if not more, than men do. This is probably because women don’t find interest in such unfeminine practices, but women really don’t know what they’re missing.

Although some girls are interested in sports like beach volleyball, tennis, and cheerleading, there are many females out there who love rough sports like football, lacrosse, and rugby. They may seem like a rare breed of women, but they do exist. I would know, I’m one of them. Although I’m not one to play them, I enjoy watching them more than anything else. I even get more excited for the Super Bowl than Christmas or my birthday. Why? Watching sports is great bonding time and stress relief (and the food is great).
A lot of people think I’m into sports because it’ll attract guys. The way I see it, LESS guys are attracted to me because I’m technically one of the guys when I’m attached to the television. I used to never understand sports and I felt that any girl who was interested in them was a faker. I used to be that girl who would scream “Home Run!” when someone kicked a soccer goal. Over time, however, I grew to love sports. I was no longer that girl who asked really stupid questions that needed to be explained everything.
Women need to give sports a second chance. Sports aren’t just for the guys, ladies. Enjoying sports is great because it’s more time you can spend with your loved ones and your significant other. I get my boyfriend football tickets every year for his birthday and we both enjoy the time we spend together at the stadium. It’s nice to come home from a long day at work and curl up on the couch after the house chores to watch ESPN with a big plate of nachos and a beer with my boy. It’s relaxing but my adrenaline gets so pumped up sometimes. Betting on teams or players is fun, too, if you’re at a party with some friends.
You don’t even have to enjoy sports to enjoy the company and fun they bring with it. So many women are missing out on enjoyable moments by choosing to spend their time avoiding sports instead of taking part in them.
