Lady Likeable’s Favourite Book

by admin on June 3, 2009

Very few people I know enjoying reading as much as I do. Although I have to agree, there aren’t many good books out there that I can say I’d read over and over, I do have one book that is definitely my favourite: “The Guardian” by Nicholas Sparks.

pile of books

Although I don’t want to ruin the ending, I’ll give a little synopsis about the book. First of all, I believe this is one of Nicholas Sparks’ best novels of all time. Julie Barenson is the main character who lives in North Carolina. Before her husband died, he arranged for her to have a dog, a great dane, named Singer. Singer was Julie’s guardian since Jim had passed. Since it’s by Sparks, there’s obviously a love story thrown into the novel, but not as tear jerk-ish as other novels by Sparks like “The Notebook” and “Nights in Rodanthe”. When Julie’s husband, Jim, dies, she eventually moves on (about four years later) and is torn between dating two men; Mike (Jim’s best friend) and Richard (a new guy to the area). After dating Richard, Julie realizes there’s nothing there and pursues Mike. Out of jealousy, Richard begins following Julie around. This is where the book starts getting creepy. When Richard follows Julie and Mike to a nightclub, things start getting ugly. Julie’s life slowly morphs into a nightmare as once handsome and sophisticated Richard begins to allow his jealously to become a life-threatening obsession. Cops become involved, and the story turns a little to police work.

I must add, the only downfall about this book was that there was a few copy-editing errors like the ’94 Pontiac Trans AM that was an ’84 on another page. However, this really doesn’t ruin the book. The story is far too compelling to even notice this flaw and it will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat.

“The Guardian” is a romance, mystery, sadness, and suspense novel all in one, written by a highly respected author. Once you start reading the novel, you’ll find it hard to put it down. All of the emotions throughout the story pull you in and make you feel like you’re actually there watching Julie’s life play out before you. You’ll find yourself laughing, crying, and never wanting the story to end.
