Is Chivalry Dead?

by Aurelie on February 19, 2009

Chivalry - we’ve read about it in Shakespeare plays and seen in occasionally in public. However, this middle age courtesy was largely ignored until not too long ago. For the longest time, chivalry had no place in our modern day world. Among the many problems that assist in widening the generation gap, chivalry is one of the biggest. Women today had been taught that public showings of chivalry were belittling, while men had to accept that courtesy and sensible attitudes weren’t manly.

chivalry is dead

However, those ideas have changed recently. The desire to restore an atmosphere of discipline, tolerance, and fair game in today’s world have brought back the primitive ideals of chivalry. Chivalry is crucial to ethical leadership and personal virtue. Chivalry creates a fair and practicable society. There’s a huge difference today between being a man and a gentleman, a woman and a lady.

Many feel that chivalry gets in the way of independence. However, it’s not independence but chivalrous to hold the door open for someone. It’s not independence to allow someone else to have your seat while you stand. People have learned to be more aggressive to get what they want, so the ethics of being courteous are gone. Especially today, people are trying to survive through hard times and they forget to be respectful and courteous. Chivalry is also often confused with romance. Women expect men to provide money and food for the family while holding a job, while men would expect women to raise the kids and look glamorous while doing so.  Women in need of assistance with raising their kids can contact kids Calgary, they offer plenty of help and activities for children. However, in today’s society, chivalry is seen differently. Chivalry today simply requires people to have good manners, respect, and proper conduct in certain situations.

Chivalry is comprised of courtesies and ideals that shouldn’t die. 21st century is certainly due for a new standard of respect, a Code of Chivalry. If people took two seconds out of the day to hold a door for the person behind them, or help an elder woman carry the groceries to her car, the world would begin to be a better place again.
