Imagine the perfect boyfriend – tall, dark, intelligent, humorous, and handsome. Maybe captain of the varsity football team. Possibly, your dream guy is the manager at some local highly regarded company. Or, maybe your ideal boyfriend just happens to be a complete computer geek who spends most of his time surfing the web or engaging in role-playing games like “World of Warcraft.” Sometimes, you just can’t choose who you fall in love with.

Everybody has a hobby that they enjoy, whether it’s shopping, horseback riding, collecting bbq recipes, painting, collecting trading cards, or engaging in the complexity of programming computer software. When you first meet someone, asking what they like to do is usually something you’d want to do before the night is over. Even if you don’t, you could still enjoy the person’s company and their personality. Maybe after a few dates, they invite you back to their place for dinner and a movie. While he’s cooking dinner, you check your Facebook and notice a couple unrecognizable icons on the desktop. Casually you ask what they are, and your dream guy mentions a few computer games and programs he’s interested in. You shrug it off, but little do you know that computer is practically his life.

Over time, it seems as though your guy is having a love affair with his computer. When you’re out on a date, he only talks about the latest Microsoft dynamics CRM or ‘finally figuring out why the blue cathodes in his tower case weren’t working’ or ‘how he finally beat an alien in Cyrsis’. Not only does he take his obsession out in to public, he keeps it in the home. Although this may have not initially been the guy you fell in love with months ago, deep down in his technical heart, you and all of the old romance still exists.
There’s nothing wrong with dating a nerdy or geeky boyfriend. If their obsession with computers and other technical gadgets goes too far, step in and let him know. Not only can it sometimes be publically embarrassing, it can sometimes ruin the relationship. Try to spend some time with your guy on the computer or playing games. In order for a relationship to work out, sometimes you have to engage in your partner’s hobbies with them — even if it means picking up a controller and putting magical spells on the opposing warriors. Worse comes to worse, if your boyfriend becomes too attached to his geeky gadgets, tell him that he needs to spend more time in the real world.
Computer nerds can possibly the most embarrassing stereotype of boyfriends to have, but a lot of the time techy guys are sweet and romantic. Every person has a flaw, not just certain kinds of people. If you’re able to overlook imperfections, then you shouldn’t be afraid to go for someone you usually wouldn’t. Even if your guy becomes too attached to his computer or game system, a little intervention will do the trick. Men will always be kids inside – some just show it more than others.
